Marked to go counter clockwise with yellow markers. The markers are yellow plastic ribbon around some of the smaller trees.
This was a very pretty little trail. I went out on a cool overcast damp day and this was such a pretty little trail I was glad I came out.
Washington Park has a lot of history to it, to much for me to go into here, but basically it was built by the CCC and has several pretty little stone buildings on the trails. The 1000 steps trail was also built by the CCC as they laid down flat rocks to make many steps going up and down part of the trial. Don’t be intimidated by the name, I don’t think there were 1000 steps, in fact the hill leading up to the overlook wasn’t that much of a challenge compared to some of the hills I’ve encountered on other trails.
The trail goes up a hill to a pretty stone structure at the look out point. Then the trail goes along the ridge line for a while which is also nice. It was pretty in fall (I took pix) and will be nice in winter also when you can see through those trees.
About ½ way on the trail you pass restrooms! In fact it’s a huge stone building of a restroom, you can’t miss it. But I did miss the sharp left turn right past the restrooms and went straight on Rockywood Trail for a bit until I figured it out. I knew my trail should be turning left but I just didn’t see the actual turn when it came up, the left turn is right behind the restroom building.
Advice: if you go out on the trails at Washington State Park, make sure to pick up a trail map, compass, and know your marker colors. There are lots of places where 2 or 3 trails overlap. Use caution on a wet day as all those mossy stone steps can be slick.
I definitely plan to visit this trail again. In fact, as you can see by the photos, there are a lot of picturesque views in this park. Opossum trail is not just pretty, it’s beautiful.
