Howell Island, a large island in the Missouri River next to Chesterfield, is the site one of of the longer trails in St. Louis county. But while it is long, it as flat as can be: Aside from a short climb over the levy next to the parking lot, it is as near to perfectly flat as you'll find.
But while the trail is flat, it's far from boring. Because of its location, the vegetation and scenery is quite different than the numerous trails along 44. There is meadow and forest, and of course, at a few points, nice views of the river.
The trail is as wide as a single-lane road, and is mowed regularly. This means it's impossible to get lost, and you don't have to worry about fighting your way through a thicket. And to top it off, it's not ten minutes from 40 & 270.
